Gols and the Region
The JURIS Winery is located in Gols on Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Burgenland,
and especially this region around the lake, is the warmest part of Austria
counting the most hours of sunshine annually. The large, shallow Lake
Neusiedl is the dominating aspect of the region’s climate. More
water evaporates from the lake yearly than it holds at any one time. The
autumn climate is greatly influenced by warm thermals rising from the
lake.
GOLS is situated on the northeast shore of the lake on the edge of the
Parndorfer Plateau that reaches to the Seewinkel area around Illmitz to
the south. The wine
growing district of Gols can be divided into two defined areas:
- Sloped vineyards on the Parndorfer Platte: south-facing locations
of predominantly diluvial quartz and gravel with occasional patches
of Pannonian clay.
- Locations in the Seewinkel area:
this part of the Pannonian steppe becomes more exposed towards Lake
Neusiedl. Over the ages, sedimentation has created various soils including
quartz and gravel.
